PLOIGOS

A navigation and geographic information service, freely available for personal use over the Internet.

The service is called PLOIGOS (ΠΛΟΗΓΟΣ) and is provided via the website www.ploigos.gr.
PLOIGOS combines efficiently the GoogleMaps sub-layer with Greek geographic data (GeoIntelligence) to offer its users navigation services of high quality. It supports address search, point to point navigation, as well as presentation of a wide variety of points of interest (e.g., banks, restaurants, public services, etc). It also allows users to pinpoint their own Points of Interest (POIs), store them and send them by email to other users. It completely covers the urban areas in all large and medium size cities in Greece, as well as many smaller ones.

PLOIGOS services for mobile phones!

The mobile ploigos (m-ploigos) application implements most of the features of the PLOIGOS web platform (www.ploigos.gr) on mobile phones. It is an advanced platform for the provision of geographic information and navigation services to mobile users that uses state of the art technologies to achieve fast response times along with high usability and ergonomy. m-ploigos is a client application installed on mobiles. It requires connection to a proxy server and supports address and crossroad localization as well as presentation of points of interest (e.g., banks, restaurants, public services) through a user friendly menu. It has been developed in JAVA (Java 2 Micro Edition, J2ME) and uses the maps and geographic data provided by GeoIntelligence in order to offer geo-information covering almost the entire Greece.

PLOIschool: The school navigator

A pioneer service of geographical information and management of school bus transportation.

The PLOIschool service facilitates the organization and management of the daily commute of students to and from the school. It offers flexible management of itineraries, dynamic presentation of itineraries on Google maps, provision of information on the times of arrival of school buses. With PLOIschool student commuting stops being a headache for school administrators, students and their parents. The PLOIschool service exploits the features of the PLOIGOS platform (http://ploischool.ploigos.gr:10080) and addresses schools that use a bus fleet for student transfers.

PLOIcity : The city navigator

This service facilitates the creation of a special version of the PLOIGOS platform for municipalities. It provides both a flexible content management system and a geo-information service to city residents and visitors.
PLOIcity provides geo-information services and multimedia content for points of interest within the municipality, such as public services, transportation (e.g., bus routes, bus stops), public places, cultural events, citizen service centers, public clinics, food and entertainment.

NearΜyFriend

Locate your friends!

A novel friend ‘finder’ service, available through subscription or online application. The service allows registered users to set up their friends (also registered users), share their current location with them, and locate their friends using the NearMyFriend website. Upon request, the service discovers the current location information of a friend, and displays it on a dynamic PLOIGOS map.

PLOIinfo: The info navigator

This service allows users to access information based on their physical location.
No doubt, this particular service can offer be very helpful to mobile users. Services, such as navigation towards the nearest pharmacies on duty or gas stations are valuable, as well as information with respect to entertainment or search of professionals and technicians. The service initially locates the user, and then provides him with free search facilities (e.g., nearest points of interest) and navigation instructions to common welfare services (hospitals, health centers, police departments, citizen service centers), and art and culture POIs (museums, exhibitions, libraries, cinemas, theatres).
In addition to the above, a “push” mode service is also available, which allows registered users to receive personalized information based on their declared interests and current physical location.

PLOIGOS – Added Value Services

The following added value services are provided through the PLOIGOS platform:

• Find-Asset: An asset tracking and management service. It is offered to insurance companies, asset management companies, cargo, freight and shipping companies for the tracking/ management of their assets (e.g., cars, tracks, etc). A special mechanism is installed on the vehicle that sends GPS signals to the service, allowing the tracking of the vehicle location in real time, and display of this information on PLOIGOS maps.

• Smart Transportation: A service addressing car hire and taxi companies for tracking the location of their customers and the routing the nearest available taxi or car.
  When a registered user sends a request via his mobile for a taxi, his location is derived from his mobile phone location information, and is displayed on PLOIGOS platform maps, thus informing the taxi company of the physical location of the customer. At the same time, the service can provide the company with information on all available cars that are close to the customer, and select the most appropriate one to send to the customer via the shortest route.

• HelpU: The user calls an emergency number and the service locates him on behalf of a third party (road assistance company, medical emergency service).The service not only locates the user needing help, but may also visualize on the map the available emergency help resources (cars, motorbikes, ambulances, etc) along with the optimal route to reach the user.
